INTRODUCTION Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels, is a ratelimiting step in solid tumor growth 13 ; . Angiogenic blood vessels express markers that are either present at very low levels or are entirely absent in normal blood vessels. Such markers include the v 3 and v 5 integrins 4, 5 ; , certain receptors for vascular growth factors 6, 7 ; , matrix metalloproteases 8, 9 ; , and other types of molecules, such as a high-molecular-weight proteoglycan 10 12 ; . The growth factor receptors and integrins are not only markers for angiogenesis, they also play an important functional role in this process 13, 14 ; . We have previously probed tumor vasculature by screening random peptide libraries displayed on phage for the ability of the phage to home to tumors in vivo. Selection of phage from the libraries in tumor-bearing mice yielded three peptide motifs capable of homing to tumor vasculature: an RGD arginine-glycineaspartic acid ; motif embedded in a double-cyclic peptide termed RGD-4C ; , an NGR asparagine-glycine-arginine ; motif, and a GSL glycine-serine-leucine ; motif. Since 1950 civilian executives and General officers with the United States Air Force have been part of an executive health program. Of these subjects, 177 had had 6 or more cholesterol determinations yearly for at least 5 years. The most characteristic factor noticed in this study was the variation in serum lipids. These were confirmed in 3 laboratories using aliquots of the same serum. There was a 25 per cent variation above the average in individuals who had no clinical evidence of heart disease. The variations in serum cholesterol seemed to be more closely related to clinically recognized coronary artery disease than was the 5-year average. Among 16 individuals with myocardial infarction, a period of abnormal fluctuation preceded each attack. For the most part these variations were usually above the 5-year average. The authors considered these variations in serum cholesterol concentration of such serious import that patients were often hospitalized until the lipid picture stabilized. We found that p-FHHSiD exhibited similar potency for blocking muscarinic receptor-mediated phosphoinositide hydrolysis in the ileum and trachea. Thus, these data show that p-FHHSiD does not discriminate between M3 muscarinic receptors in guinea pig ileum and bovine trachea. This observation is highly relevant because it is thought that the M3 receptor mediates contraction directly in guinea pig ileum and trachea for reviews, see Eglen et al., 1996; Ehlert et al., 1997 ; . It is conceivable that p-FHHSiD might exhibit different affinities for bovine and guinea pig tracheal M3 receptors; however, the agreement between the observed pKB value for phosphoinositide hydrolysis in bovine trachea and the observed and true pKB values for antagonizing contraction in the guinea pig trachea argues against this possibility. At that point the Visica system was set to Lo freeze, which maintained the iceball shape without further growth while it was excised. Specimens were marked for orientation and x-rayed, and their mass was determined by water displacement. In the patients enrolled at LGH, re-excision rates were significantly lower with this technique than with needlewire excision, though both groups were significantly lower than historical controls, which suggested that techniques were improved in study patients, a common phenomenon in trials of all kinds. The use of cryo-assisted lumpectomy CAL ; added about 12 minutes to operative times, but resulted in removal of significantly less tissue and better cosmesis.16 We continue to use this modality in select patients with small and deep tumors. The CAL cavity is ideally conformed for those patients who will undergo partial breast irradiation with Mammosite. Mammosite, the only FDA-approved catheter device for delivery of cavity brachytherapy, will be discussed further in a coming article on radiation therapy and ketoprofen.
